Pete Sampras advanced to the quarterfinals of the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament when New Zealand’s Brett Steven defaulted because of an upset stomach.

No. 3 seed Goran Ivanisevic made the quarters with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Martin Lee, a British teenager. No. 7 Jim Courier was eliminated by Australian serve-and-volley specialist Patrick Rafter, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
