Bomb Kills 8 Police During Truck Search

Associated Press

A bomb apparently triggered by remote control exploded in a truck as it was being searched at a Bogota police station on Tuesday, killing eight officers and injuring 10, officials said.

Seven of the officers, including a captain, died on the spot, some of them blown to pieces. Body parts were strewn across the station’s parking lot.

The eighth officer died at nearby Fontibon hospital, where a nurse told the Radionet network that the injured suffered serious burns and some lost extremities.

The truck’s driver was detained by police and was refusing to identify himself, said Bogota police chief Gen. Teodoro Ocampo.

The blast occurred as officers were searching the back of a truck that had been seized earlier in the day in Mosquera, 10 miles west of the capital, Ocampo said.
