Yankees Get Back At Mets

From Wire Reports

Interleague

David Wells, ejected from his last start, pitched eight strong innings and the New York Yankees tied their Subway Series with the New York Mets on Tuesday night with a 6-3 victory before 56,253 in rocking Yankee Stadium in New York.

Derek Jeter went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Luis Sojo and Paul O’Neill had two hits apiece for the Yankees.

Bernard Gilkey hit a two-run homer for the Mets.

Fans may refer to the matchup as the Subway Series, but if there’s one player among New York’s two major league teams who understands what a subway series is, it’s Mets first baseman John Olerud.

Olerud, traded to the Mets from the Toronto Blue Jays during the offseason, has found that one of the best ways to get from his apartment in Manhattan to Shea Stadium in Queens is to take the No. 7 train, which has a stop just beyond the right field wall.

Olerud’s quiet personality and unassuming appearance allows him to blend in with the hundreds of New Yorkers who pack the train each afternoon.

“I haven’t been noticed yet, or at least nobody’s ever said anything to me,” Olerud said. “That’s good, I think. I feel like a normal person on the subway.”

Dodgers 4, Angels 3 Los Angeles

Todd Zeile’s second solo homer in as many innings boosted Los Angeles over Anaheim in the first regular season meeting between the teams.

Zeile had greeted reliever Mike James with a leadoff homer in the eighth to pull Los Angeles within 3-2. After Wilton Guerrero scored from second on a two-out wild pitch by Troy Percival in the ninth, Zeile hit his 14th homer into the left field pavilion on the next pitch.

Marlins 3, Tigers 2 Detroit

A leadoff home run in the ninth inning by Florida’s Bobby Bonilla cleared the right field roof, keeping Detroit winless in interleague play.

Bonilla’s homer, his fifth of the season, was the 33rd to clear the roof at Tiger Stadium and the third this season.

Rangers 10, Rockies 8 (11) Denver

Juan Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning, giving Texas the victory in Colorado’s first interleague home game.

Gonzalez, who had five RBIs, connected off Steve Reed (1-3) for his 14th home run after Rusty Greer singled with one out.

Colorado forced extra innings by rallying from an 8-3 deficit with two runs in the eighth on Vinny Castilla’s two-run homer and three more in the ninth highlighted by Ellis Burks’ two-run home run.

Twins 13, Pirates 1 Minneapolis

LaTroy Hawkins, making his first major league appearance in more than a year, allowed three hits in seven innings to lead Minnesota to its first home interleague victory.

Greg Myers, Scott Stahoviak, Chuck Knoblauch and Denny Hocking each drove in two runs for the Twins.

White Sox 5, Cubs 3 Chicago

Playing before the largest regular-season crowd at new Comiskey Park, the White Sox scored early, got steady pitching from Doug Drabek and evened their historic series at one game each.

Indians 5, Reds 1 Cleveland

Omar Vizquel, Cleveland’s No. 9 hitter, awakened his team from a power slump with a three-run homer and five RBIs as the Indians defeated Cincinnati to even their series at one win apiece.

Orioles 5, Expos 4 Baltimore

Five Baltimore relievers allowed one run over the final four innings and the Orioles ended Montreal’s 10-game winning streak.

Roberto Alomar had two RBIs and Tony Tarasco homered as the Orioles improved to 4-1 in interleague play. Montreal became the last N.L. team to lose an interleague game.

Brewers 4, Cardinals 3 Milwaukee

Milwaukee rallied from a 3-0 deficit to overcome the sterling play of St. Louis catcher Tom Lampkin.

Lampkin doubled and homered and threw out two runners to quell a seventh-inning rally.

Astros 10, Royals 2 Kansas City, Mo.

Substitute starter Ramon Garcia allowed one hit in five innings and Luis Gonzalez’s bases-loaded single keyed a six-run fifth inning for Houston.

Garcia (3-4), starting in place of the injured Shane Reynolds, yielded only Jeff King’s one-out single in the fourth.

Gonzalez stretched his hitting streak to 21 games, the longest of the season in the National League.

Red Sox 12, Phillies 6 Boston

Darren Bragg had three hits and four RBIs to lead Boston to a 4-1 interleague record, giving the longtime World Series also-rans four wins over the N.L. for the first time since 1918.

Braves 8, Blue Jays 7 Toronto

Ryan Klesko’s three-run homer helped Atlanta weather Shawn Green’s two homers and lead the Braves to their second straight victory over Toronto.

Athletics 10, Padres 3 San Diego

Mark McGwire hit his first home run in five interleague games to spark Oakland’s victory, spoiling San Diego’s home interleague debut.
