Corsica Bombing Follows Pattern

Compiled From Wire Services

A bomb exploded at a bank Wednesday, one day after Corsican separatists promised to suspend their 22-year campaign of violence. The attack was typical of the militants’ fight for greater autonomy.

The predawn explosion in the town of Sartene damaged an entrance and an automatic teller machine at a branch of state-controlled bank Credit Agricole, police said.

As in most attacks attributed to the militants on this Mediterranean island, the bomb caused no injuries and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The militants’ attacks, almost always at deserted buildings in the middle of the night, usually target government offices or state-run businesses.

The Corsican National Liberation Front-Historic Branch, the most active of rival militant groups, published a letter in a Corsican newspaper Tuesday promising unconditional peace.
