Dollar Gains Against Yen
The dollar rose against the yen Thursday on news of a narrower-than-expected trade deficit in April but fell in most other foreign-exchange dealings due to broad rallies in the mark and pound.
The Commerce Department’s report showing an $8.36 billion shortfall was less than the $10 billion widely forecast, and the gap with Japan widened only marginally to $4.84 billion from $4.61 billion in March.
There had been fears that a major deterioration in the U.S. trade imbalance might make the United States take steps to push the dollar lower.
