Finley’s 3 Homers Help Padres Rip S.F.

Steve Finley homered three times and Wally Joyner added two homers as the San Diego Padres beat the Giants 11-6 Monday night in San Francisco.

Jim Bruske got his first major league win shortly after being promoted from the minors. He pitched five scoreless innings of relief.

Finley also hit three homers on May 19.

Pirates 6, Astros 0 Houston

Francisco Cordova pitched a two-hitter and Jermaine Allensworth hit a bases-loaded triple to help Pittsburgh snap a six-game losing streak.

Cordova (6-5) pitched his second career shutout and second this season.

Mets 3, Braves 2 New York

Rick Reed outpitched John Smoltz, and Carl Everett hit a two-run homer that sent New York to its fifth consecutive victory.

In their first test of the season against the National League champions, the Mets stopped the Braves’ three-game winning streak and left Smoltz winless in six consecutive starts.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 0 St. Louis

Rookie Jeremi Gonzalez (3-2) pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game in the major leagues, and Chicago stopped its five-game losing streak.

Gonzalez (3-2), a 22-year-old right-hander, was making his sixth career start and had been 0-2 in his previous three outings.

Dodgers 5, Rockies 3 Los Angeles

Eric Karros and Raul Mondesi homered on consecutive pitches, and Hideo Nomo allowed five hits in eight innings for L.A.

Nomo (7-6), in his first game against Colorado since his no-hitter at Coors Field last Sept. 17, struck out five and walked three.

Phillies 9, Marlins 3 Philadelphia

Curt Schilling struck out a career-high 13 and got plenty of support from rookie-of-the-year candidate Scott Rolen to lead Philadelphia’s victory.

Rolen, hit on the helmet by Atlanta’s Greg Maddux in Sunday’s game, homered and drove in a career-high five runs.

Expos 5, Reds 0 Montreal

Jim Bullinger scattered four hits for his fourth career shutout and F.P. Santangelo homered to lead Montreal.

Bullinger (5-6) pitched his second shutout this season. It was his sixth career complete game. He retired the first 11 before Lenny Harris’ two-out double in the fourth.

Mets pitcher Dave Mlicki was named player of the week after allowing two runs and 15 hits while striking out 15 in 17 innings… . Dodgers right-hander Ramon Martinez is to have his pitching shoulder examined today. He has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. … San Diego placed left-hander Heath Murray (1-1, 6.91 ERA), who formerly pitched for the Spokane Indians, on the 15-day disabled list because of shoulder soreness… . The Astros put relief pitcher Russ Springer on the 15-day disabled list after he strained his lower back sneezing… . The Braves placed outfielder Kenny Lofton (.344, 33 RBI, 19 SB) on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled groin muscle.
