Giants League Teams In 3-Way Tie
There’s a virtual three-way deadlock in Spokane Valley Baseball’s Giants League following Valley Electric’s initial loss.
The Evergreen Junior High team was edged 7-6 by Food Rainbow on David Morrison’s fourth-inning 3-run triple and a clutch RBI single by Dylan Bullock.
It was Food Rainbow’s third-straight win and brought Valley Electric into a tie with Broadway Eye Care for the lead. Perfection Tire is one-half game behind.
Earlier, Valley Electric beat Greenacres Gypsum and Jim Frazier Trophy to run its record at the time to 6-0.
Jay Pearson had a dozen strikeouts in seven innings. He also had a double and triple for three RBIs against Jim Frazier.
Andrew Bower went 4-for-4, including a triple, against Greenacres.
Since losing to Valley Electric in its season opener, Broadway Eye Care has won six straight games.
In four victories last week, the team used four different pitchers, including Michael Koentopp, who fanned 16 batters in seven innings.
Brett Neste was 7-for-8 in the two most recent victories and had 7 runs batted in. Included was the game-winning double in a 7-6 win over Valley Firefighters on Monday.
Elsewhere, Matt Stonehocker, Justin Guilford and Ryan Herring all had three hits in Spokane County Sheriff’s Association’s 18-3 win over the Firefighters.
On Saturday, the Firefighers won 5-1 on the combined one-hit pitching of Scott Allen and Chad Mathison.
Midget standings shuffle
First place is up for grabs after last week’s Midget League games.
Tom’s Barber Shop leads a conference in which one game separates eight teams.
Included was a win over contender Spokane Indians and another over Happy Hatter, 6-1, in which Russel McCathern hit a triple and two singles and Gavin Heaton drove in the other four runs.
The Indians handed Valley Kiwanis its first loss, 8-5, as Blake Trimmer went 3-for-3 and Greg Susinger hit a two-run single to give the team its initial lead.
Spokane Indians are a game behind the leaders after winning two more times. Trimmer and Sam Brune were each 3-for-4 against Ashco Insurance.
Valley Kiwanis won twice, 8-0 and 8-2, Kenny Zachow with four hits, including a pair of doubles. Pitcher Jake Sawyer had three hits, including a pair of doubles, against Inland Imaging and Jason Nelson had two doubles against Valley Instant Printing.
Another 5-2 team, Ellingson-Paxton, won three games, Brandon Sweeney fanning nine batters in three innings of pitching during a win over Ashco Insurance. Marty Damron drove in three runs.
Two days earlier, K.C. Little drove in three against Northwest Fence. In the third win, Willie Horlen had three hits and saved an 8-6 victory.
Neurosurgery Assoc. pitchers Matt Johnston and Jeremy Kline combined for 15 strikeouts.
Conley’s Restaurant batter Myles Nelson had a 5-RBI game.
Four still perfect in Pee Wees
Two-thirds of the way through the Pee Wee season four teams remain unbeaten.
Dave’s Grill, CXT and Homestead Construction are all 8-0 heading into this week’s games. Medicine Shoppe is 7-0.
Two other teams have a single loss.
Medicine Shoppe won big and also won by a run, edging Pavillion Park 3-2 with a three-run sixth inning.
Two were out and Jake Mehrens had two strikes when he lashed a bases-loaded single to tie the game.
Brad Burger followed with the game-winning hit.
Mehrens had three hits and Tim Owen drove in five runs with a pair of home runs during a 23-1 victory.
Contenders Dr. Psomas and Bert Shields Auto kept pace a game behind the leaders.
Jay Dee Edlund and Tyler Alvarado drove in two runs each as Bert Shields escaped Pizza Hut 5-4.
Jeremy Montang had 18 strikeouts in six innings during two Dr. Psomas victories. Michael Johnson went 7-for-7 in two wins and had 6 runs batted in. Matthew Winkler went 4-for-4 during one victory.
Pavillion Park pitchers Kyle Olson, Matthew Rodriguez and Braden Jensen combined for 28 strikeouts in two victories. Rodriguez was 5-for-5 with six RBIs.
Dr. DeCounter moved up in the standings and Tony Richardson was busy. He hurled no-hit ball for three innings, facing 12 batters and striking out nine. He also hit a single and three-run homer.
Ladies Roundball Camp
Registration is underway for Mark Kuipers’ Ladies Roundball Camp at West Valley High School July 7-18.
The camp is for female basketball players grades 2-11, It costs $45, and each camper will receive a Nike tanktop, game socks and a sweatband.
Grades 2-7 will go from 8-9:30 a.m., followed by grades 8-11 from 9:45-11:30.
