Savard Retires

Compiled From Wire Services

Denis Savard retired after 17 NHL seasons, seven All-Star selections and more than 1,300 points.

The Chicago Blackhawks will retire his jersey, No. 18, lifting it to the rafters of the United Center.

“I hope every young player can have a career like mine,” he said. “When I played I gave everything I could. I was a lucky player. In 17 years, I had no major injuries.”

Ted Nolan needed only a few seconds to consider the contract offer from the Buffalo Sabres before realizing he would be looking for a new job.

Nolan, the coach of the year after guiding the Sabres to their first division title in 16 years, rejected a one-year deal and said a weekend to think it over wouldn’t change his mind.
