State-Champion Discus Thrower Pecht To Compete For Cougars
West Valley High discus thrower Vinnie Pecht, who last month won the boys State AA title, signed a letter of intent to attend Washington State University, Cougars coach Rick Sloan announced Thursday.
Pecht’s state-winning throw of 207 feet, 2 inches, was the best in Washington prep history and the second-best in the nation among last year’s high schoolers.
Pecht, 6-5 and 240 pounds, lettered four years for WV track coach Jim McLachlan and three years for basketball coach Joe Feist.
“We are very excited at the signing of Vinnie Pecht,” Sloan said. “He has a tremendous lever system and a tremendous frame, but still has a way to go from a strength standpoint. For a discus thrower of that magnitude, he doesn’t have real high strength levels. As he gets stronger and his technique continues to evolve and improve, he’s going to be one of the great discus throwers in Washington State history. We are looking forward to his involvement in our program.” The Cougars also signed John Cote, a 1996 Lindbergh High graduate who has the best 800-meter time (1 minute, 49.41 seconds) in state prep history.
