Dwight Gooden stopped Cleveland again as the New York Yankees became the first A.L. team to beat an opponent 1,000 times, defeating the visiting Indians 3-2 Friday night for their fourth straight victory.
Sandy Alomar extended his hitting streak to 24 games, longest by an Indians player since Dale Mitchell’s 27-game string in 1953.
Gooden beat the Indians last Friday at Jacobs Field.

Albert Belle had a career-high five hits, including his 18th homer, as Chicago beat Minnesota to push its season-high winning streak to seven games.
Belle, who drove in two runs and scored four times, had three singles before his 407-foot solo drive off reliever Greg Swindell in the seventh.

Cordero probe slated
The career of troubled Red Sox outfielder Wilfredo Cordero reached the critical stage Friday night.
Shortly after Major League Baseball announced that it would “immediately invesitigate” the Cordero situation, Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette said the club would decide in “the next couple of days” if the accused wife abuser should be released, traded, or placed in a rehabilitation program.
Clearing the bases
Third baseman Jeff Cirillo and the Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a four-year contract extension through 2001. Through 393 major league games, Cirillo, 27, is hitting .299 with 33 homers and 184 RBIs. … Manager Cito Gaston of the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly has been criticized by four of his players for leaving ace Pat Hentgen in for eight innings of a 13-12 loss to the Boston Red Sox Wednesday.
New York is 1,000-804 against Cleveland since 1903. There are 12 instances of N.L. teams with at least 1,000 wins against a foe, primarily because the National League began play in 1876.
