Whoever gave the black bear its name has caused considerable confusion.

In Montana, at least, only about 60 percent of black bears are actually black. The remainder, even though they are all Ursus americanus, can be cinnamon , blonde with black legs, blonde with brown legs, light brown, medium brown or dark chocolate brown.
