Nemechek Sets Record

Compiled From Wire Services

Joe Nemechek set a track record while claiming his seventh career Busch Grand National pole in qualifying for the Lysol 200 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Nemechek’s speed of 116.128 mph was good enough to hold off fellow NASCAR Winston Cup regular Terry Labonte, who went around the road course at an average of 115.858. Both were in Chevrolets.

NASCAR Busch series points leader Randy LaJoie, who overcame an early crash that did extensive damage to the driver’s side and rear end in the morning practice, was able to rebound in qualifying to start 17th today.

At Fountain, Colo., Scott Sharp made a memorable return to the cockpit, taking the pole position for today’s inaugural Samsonite 200 Indy Racing League event at the new Pikes Peak International Raceway.

Sharp, who was not allowed to drive for five weeks after sustaining a head injury in a crash during practice for last month’s Indianapolis 500, bumped fellow IRL star Tony Stewart out of the top spot with a lap of 176.117 mph.

Jim Guthrie, a winner earlier this season at Phoenix, was injured in a crash during the morning practice session. He is in good condition with a spinal fracture that is expected to sideline him for six to eight weeks.

Gary Scelzi (top fuel), Randy Anderson (funny car), Jim Yates (pro stock) and Matt Hines (pro stock motorcycle) stayed No. 1 in their respective categories after qualifying ended Saturday in the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals at Madison, Ill.

At Nazareth, Pa., Mike Bliss led qualifiers for the NAPA Autocare 200 at Nazareth Speedway with a speed of 127.298 mph.
