Lakeside Makes It A Sweep Boys And Girls Both Earn Berths To State
The Lakeside High School girls and boys basketball backers chanted the magical words twice Friday night at Mead High School.
“On to state! On to state.”
Indeed, the Eagles will be represented by both its girls and boys squads at next week’s State A high school basketball tournaments at Tacoma. Last season, both teams finished third.
The girls won the Northeast A District’s sole invitation with a 59-52 win over Newport.
The boys earned their spot by beating Chewelah 55-44. But the Cougars will have another chance at a ticket to Tacoma tonight then they meet Medical Lake at 7:30 at Mead High School, site of the Northeast A District high school tournament.
Medical Lake stayed alive with a convincing 68-37 win over Freeman in Friday’s night opener. The Scotties and the Cardinals have met four times this year, most recently last Saturday when the Cougars came out on top 50-39. The series is tied at 2-2.
Girls: Lakeside 59, Newport 52
Lakeside’s Brianne Jolley said she was certain her Eagles would defeat the Grizzlies for a spot in the girls state tournament.
But it took a fourth-quarter comeback, orchestrated by Jolley, as Lakeside (22-1) earned a 3-0 season sweep over Newport (20-4).
“It was just a matter of us stepping up,” said Jolley, while taking her turn cutting down the net.
The 5-foot-11 forward finished with 32 points, 14 in the fourth quarter. Her biggest bucket was a 3-point baseline shot with 3:08 left in the game that gave the Eagles a 54-50 lead. Just 20 seconds earlier, teammate Carrie Waddell drained a 3-pointer to give Lakeside a 51-50 lead.
“I’m just relieved,” said Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz. “Our team didn’t play well until the last 4 or 5 minutes.”
Newport, meanwhile, shot the lights out in the third quarter, hitting 10 of 16. Midway through the quarter, the Grizzlies began a stretch in which they hit 7 of 7 baskets and led by as many as seven points, 38-31.
Sophomore guard Carey Sauer, Newport’s top scorer with 24 points, hit all three of her 3-point attempts in the third and the Grizzlies were ahead 44-40 at the end of the quarter.
They extended their lead to 46-42 on a Sauer jumper to start the fourth, but seconds later, Jolley hit a baseline jump shot. Throughout much of the game, the Northeast A League’s top two scorers matched shot for shot.
