Menem Questioned About Spending
Opposition politicians called on President Carlos Menem on Friday to explain how he is paying for a mansion and other projects in his Andean hometown of Anillaco.
The debate was sparked by a television report Thursday that claimed that Menem plans to live in a $500,000 home in Anillaco when he leaves office in 1999. It also questioned a runway, the country’s third largest, which has been built in the town, whose population is just 600 people.
Reporters said the report was delayed a day because of government pressure not to air it.
