Eagle Capitalizes On Turnover To Grab State Berth From Cda

In a game that was close throughout, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings fell just short of a berth in the A-1 State basketball tournament Saturday by losing to Eagle 42-39.

The Vikings were up by a point with less than a minute remaining when they turned the ball over. Eagle took advantage of the mistake, scoring to go up by two points. Then Ryan Kerfoot added a free throw.

CdA Eddie Gibbs missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer that could have sent the game into overtime.

Junior post Lukas O’Dowd led Coeur d’Alene (15-10) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Dane Roy led Eagle (16-9) with a 19-point effort.

College baseball

Host Lewis-Clark State College and University of Portland heaped the latest defeats on Washington State University’s struggling baseball team, downing the Cougars on the second day of the Banana Belt tournament at Lewiston.

L-C State (7-1-1) scored all of its runs in the third inning and rolled to a 7-2 victory. Portland (4-3-1) scored three times in the eighth inning to earn an 8-6 victory that left WSU with a 1-14 record.

L-C State improved its tournament record to 3-0-1. Portland has a 2-2 record.

In the day’s other game, Oregon State, 2-1 in tournament play, scored nine runs in the fourth inning and thumped Canada’s National Baseball Institute 16-6. NBI remains winless in four games.

With WSU leading 2-0, Lewis-Clark State combined three hits, two errors, two walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches for seven runs. Bucky Jacobsen’s two-run double was the big hit.

Alan Patrick’s two-run double broke a 6-6 tie for Portland.
