Saneholtz Tallies 24 As WSU Wins

In her final home game, Amy Saneholtz scored a career-high 24 points as the Washington State University women’s basketball team turned back Arizona State 84-70 Saturday in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Pullman.

Washington State (10-15, 4-12 Pac-10) had three other players in double figures. Yvonne Kunze added 18 points to a game-high nine rebounds, Jennifer Ludwicki put up 14 points, and Jade Hyett contributed 13 points, five assists and six steals.

ASU (8-18, 2-14) was led by Kristine Sand and Stephanie Freeman, who had 17 points each.

Washington State, which led from the opening tip, had a 43-27 advantage at halftime. After the intermission, the Cougars briefly opened a 29-point advantage.

“There are certain wins that are sweeter then others and tonight with Amy, Kristin and Jade having their final home game, was especially sweet,” coach Harold Rhodes said.

In her final home game, Laure Savasta scored eight of her 20 points in the final 4:42 to lead the Huskies (15-10, 10-6) past the Wildcats (21-6, 11-5) at Seattle.

The Hawks (13-11) shot 50 percent from the floor while the Sasquatch (20-10) connected on only 26 percent at Pasco in a game that gave CBC the NWAACC East Division’s first seed in the conference tournament.

“They were hot, we were not,” said Spokane coach Bruce Johnson.

CBC, with the poorest record in the field, will face Lower Columbia (19-9) when the tournament opens Thursday at Mount Vernon, Wash. CC Spokane will face Clark (24-4) at 3 p.m.

New Mexico St. 72, Idaho 66

The Aggies shot a blistering 67 percent to defeat the Vandals at Las Cruces, N.M., and cost Idaho the Eastern Division’s top seed in the Big West Conference tournament.

In the aftermath of the regular-season finale for both teams, the University of Nevada beat Cal State Fullerton 68-60 and claimed the first seed. New Mexico State (11-15, 8-6) and Idaho (13-13, 8-6) finished in a second-place tie. Idaho earned the second seed on a tiebreaker.

Idaho will face the Western Division’s No. 3 seed, probably Pacific, Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. when tournament play begins at Reno, Nev.

Saturday, New Mexico State missed just six shots from the field in the first half, hitting 14 of 20 attempts (70 percent), on the way to a 37-33 lead. Junior forward Kathryn Gussett kept Idaho in the game with 20 points.
