Cigarette Probably Caused Deadly Fire

A cigarette probably sparked a Saturday night fire that killed a Newport man, authorities said.

Pend Oreille County sheriff’s deputies suspect Billy J. Jared, 53, fell asleep in his 281 Viet Road trailer home before putting out a burning cigarette.

The 8 p.m. blaze, which destroyed the trailer, was reported by a nearby resident.

The fire remains under investigation. , DataTimes
