I-90 Pass Reopens After Slides Cleared

From Staff And Wire Reports

Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass reopened Sunday after being closed for nearly 24 hours by a series of snow slides.

The westbound lanes were reopened at 6:04 a.m. and the eastbound lanes at 6:40 a.m., the state Department of Transportation said.

The slides about 8:30 a.m. Saturday caused at least three vehicles to run into the snow, but no serious injuries were reported, authorities said.

About 1,000 skiers, resort and ski slope employees, travelers, and other people were stuck at the summit until the road was cleared, including as many as 200 with overnight accommodations.

The snow slides began as crews were preparing to detonate explosives for avalanche control work, Transportation Department spokeswoman Clarissa Lundeen said.
