Padres Nip Mariners

Terry Shumpert hit a tying, two-run homer in the ninth inning and scored on Mark Smith’s two-out single in the bottom of the 11th as the San Diego Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 10-9.

Shumpert drove in three runs and scored twice. He sent the game into extra innings with his homer off Bob Wells.

Smith had three hits. His winning single came off losing pitcher Rusty Meacham.

Brian Raabe was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs for Seattle. Jose Cruz Jr. went 2 for 2, giving him a 5-for-6 weekend against the Padres.

Scott Sanders, traded from the Padres to Seattle for pitcher Sterling Hitchcock, made his Mariners debut. He allowed three runs in three innings.
