Obituaries

Claude McCullough Lewiston

Service for Claude A. McCullough, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse.

Mr. McCullough died Saturday.

He was born in Palouse and graduated from high school there.

In 1941 he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged as a technical sergeant of the 400th Bomb Squadron in 1945.

In 1946 he married Esther Hansen in Wenatchee.

They settled in the West Cove area near Palouse and farmed. They moved to Troy, Idaho, in 1955 and farmed and raised cattle.

Mr. McCullough also worked as a machinist at the A.P. Green Brick Factory in Troy for 21 years. He retired in 1978.

They moved to Moscow, Idaho, in 1980 and to Lewiston in 1987.

Mr. McCullough was a member of the Valley Christian Center in Lewiston and the Lewiston Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ron McCullough of Nashville, Tenn., and Jerry McCullough of Moscow; a daughter, Diane Daniels of Colfax; two brothers, Raymond McCullough of Magalia, Calif., and Gene McCullough of Walnut Creek, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Addie Vanderpoel St. Maries

Service for Addie E. Vanderpoel, 89, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Vanderpoel, who was born in Alberta, died Tuesday.

In 1910 she moved to Troy, Idaho, and in the 1920s she moved to Bovill, Idaho, where she worked for Blackwell Lumber Co.

She was a naturalized U.S. citizen and settled on a ranch at Santa Creek near Emida, Idaho, where she lived for more than 42 years.

She moved to St. Maries in 1980 and was a member of the St. Maries Senior Citizens and the St. Maries Grange and had served as a Democratic precinct person.

Mrs. Vanderpoel also was a member of the Nazarene Church of Troy, the Santa Central Grange and the Bovill Royal Neighbors of America.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, in 1978.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Josephine and Lucille Harris, both of Spokane; and 15 nieces and nephews.

Vestana ‘Yolande’ Rouse Spokane

Service for Vestana “Yolande” Rouse, 83, will be at 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Rouse, who was born in Seattle, died Saturday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for more than 44 years.

Mrs. Rouse was a member of the Daughters of the Nile.

She is survived by her husband, Steven Rouse; a daughter, Judy Steele of Portland; a son, Dick Rouse of Denver; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Helen Preston Malden, Wash.

Graveside service for Helen D. Preston, 83, is set for 11 a.m. today at Oakesdale (Wash.) Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at Malden Community Church. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Rosalia, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Preston, a longtime Malden and Farmington, Wash., resident, died Friday.

She was born in Farmington.

She had worked as a reporter for the Colfax Gazette and the Standard Register in Tekoa, Wash.

Mrs. Preston was a member of the Malden Community Church, the Rebekah Lodge and the United Transportation Union Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice Knight and Barbara Stockwell; two sons, Alva Bradley and David Preston; a brother, Alva Blue; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Jean Gay Colville, Wash.

Service for Jean Louise Gay, 60, will be at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Colville. Burial will follow at Meyers Falls Cemetery in Kettle Falls, Wash. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gay, a 25-year Colville resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Port Angeles, Wash.

In 1954 she married Lee Gay in Puyallup, Wash., and they lived in the Seattle area for 17 years. Mrs. Gay operated a children’s day care in her home. She and her husband also served as foster parents for several children.

In 1971 they moved to Colville, and she worked as a custodian at Colville Junior High School for 12 years.

She and her husband operated Lee’s Carpet Cleaning for the past 13 years.

Mrs. Gay is survived by her husband; a son, Rick Gay of Keene, Ontario; three daughters, Virginia Ramshaw of Poway, Calif., Diane Kreis of Arden, Wash., and Rebecca Anderson of Clearbrook, British Columbia; three sisters, Joanne Hall of Kent, Wash., Sandra Adams of Renton, Wash., and Sharon Valencia of Spokane; her mother, Mary Moorhead of Kettle Falls; a brother, Gary Moorhead of Colville; and 10 grandchildren.

Billy Jerred Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Billy Gene Jerred, 53, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport.

Mr. Jerred, who died Saturday when his home caught fire, was born in Ione, Wash., and moved to Newport when he was 10.

He had worked as a heavy truck driver and also worked in the janitorial industry.

He is survived by his wife, Eletha (Bancroft) Jerred; a daughter, Lisa Wright of Colbert; a stepson, Andrew Terry of Joplin, Mo.; a sister, Charlotte Jerred of Newport; a stepsister, Sylvia Walls; four grandchildren and a stepgrandson.

Robert Olsen Deer Park

Memorial service for Robert Arbie Olsen, 42, is set for 11 a.m. today at Rivers-of-Life Church (formerly Assemblies of God Church) in Loon Lake, Wash. Private burial will be at Zion Hill/Trysil Cemetery in Clayton, Wash. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Olsen, who was born in Ocean City, Ore., died Friday.

He graduated from Deer Park High School and served in the Navy.

He worked for Northwest Alloys in Addy, Wash.

Mr. Olsen is survived by his wife, Danielle Olsen; a son, Joseph Olsen of Spokane; five daughters, Kathie Smith of Deer Park, Allegra Tollefson of Colbert, Amanda Smith of Riverside, Wash., Crystal Olsen, of Sea-Tac, Wash., and Audrey Ann Olsen of Westport, Wash.; two brothers, Richard Olsen of Clayton and Russell Olsen of Spokane; three sisters, Karen Layton of Anchorage, Alaska, and Becky Hines and Robynn Ross, both of Blaine, Wash.; his mother, Opal Olsen of Clayton; and four grandchildren.

Thelma Langdon Bellevue, Wash.

Private service was held for Thelma M. Langdon, a longtime Spokane piano teacher. Burial will be in the family plot in Palouse, Wash.

Mrs. Langdon, who was born in Cincinnati, died Sunday. She was 93.

She graduated from Washington State University after majoring in piano and music Education. She moved to Spokane from Palouse in 1937 and was a private, nationally accredited piano teacher. She moved to Bellevue three years ago.

Mr. Langdon served as president of the Spokane Music Teachers Association in 1952 and as the Northeast District vice president for the Washington State Music Teachers Association in 1970.

She was an honorary life member of the Washington Music Teachers Association and a member of the National Music Teachers Association and Mu Phi Epsilon.

Her husband, Joseph Langdon, died in 1994.

Mrs. Langdon is survived by a son, David Langdon of Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Sally Skinner of Bellevue; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Randolph Wallace Otis Orchards

Memorial service for Randolph “Randy” Wallace, 57, will be at 1 p.m.

Thursday at St. Joseph’s Cemetery Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wallace who died Saturday, was born in Kendrick, Idaho, and graduated from high school there.

He served in the Navy from 1958 until 1967.

He was a construction electrician for 30 years and had lived in Spokane 27 years.

Mr. Wallace was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 3433 and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 73.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Dorothy Wallace; a daughter, Teri Wallace of Otis Orchards; two sons, Duane Wallace of Richmond, Va., and Darrin Wallace of Nampa, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

Lida Pharness St. Maries

Memorial service for Lida Pharness, 89, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Closing service will be conducted by the St. Maries Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Ms. Pharness, who was born in Spokane, died Monday.

She grew up in Spokane and graduated from Lewis-Clark High School in 1929. She went on to work as a secretary for the family business at Chase Engineering.

Ms. Pharness moved to Plummer, Idaho, in 1938 and was a homemaker. She later divorced.

She moved to St. Maries in 1964 and was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and the St. Maries Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a brother, Henry Chase of Spokane; two grandchildren, Vickie Harvey and Butch Pharness; and four great-grandchildren, Charlynn, David, Cigi and Dustin.

Ronald Melcher Spokane

Memorial service for Ronald C. Melcher, 52, was Tuesday at the Jesuit Chapel on the Gonzaga University campus.

Mr. Melcher, who died Monday, was born in Rogers, Ariz.

He was a longtime Spokane resident and graduated from Shadle Park High School and attended Mount Vernon (Wash.) Community College.

He was a self-employed construction contractor.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Nieding; his parents, Lois and Lloyd Melcher of Spokane; a sister, Carolyn Linder of Spokane; and two brothers, Loran Melcher of Post Falls and Kevin Melcher of Spokane.

June (French) White Spokane

No service will be held for June Arline (French) White, 72, at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. White, who was born in Richmond, Calif., died Sunday.

She was a former Priest River, Idaho, resident and owned a cattle ranch with her husband. They moved to Spokane 11 years ago.

Mrs. White is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ivan White; and a brother, Howard French of California.

Irene Courtright Spokane

Visitation for Irene G. Courtright, 85, is scheduled from noon to 9 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Courtright, who died Thursday, was born in South Dakota.

She was a 77-year Spokane resident and had worked as a meat wrapper.

Mrs. Courtright was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, the Ladies of the Moose, Half Moon Grange, Kappa Zeta and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Courtright.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Yarroll; a son, Byron Courtright; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Irene Breza Chewelah, Wash.

Service for Irene L. Breza, 83, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chewelah United Church of Christ. Burial will be at Chewelah Memorial Park. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Breza, who died Sunday, was born in Carteret, N.J.

She married Zolton Breza in 1933 and had lived in Stevens County since 1962. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 101.

Her husband died in 1973.

Survivors include two sons, Bill and Bob Breza, both of Chewelah; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
