Port Of Moses Lake Buys Cold War Relic

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Port of Moses Lake has acquired the last federal building at the former Larson Air Force Base to convert the monstrous Cold War relic into a document storage center for Boeing Co. and others.

The port said Thursday that it paid the federal General Services Administration $235,000 for the three-story, windowless command center built to house 400 people during nuclear war.

Larson, a 9,500-acre facility near the Grant County Airport, was closed in 1965. The 130,000-square-foot building purchased by the port was part of the North American Radar Air Defense system.

The port has leased the building to First Team/TITAN, according to port spokesman Albert Anderson. The company employs a dozen people to store documents and computer tapes for Boeing and others. The companies use the center as a backup database as a precaution against earthquakes or other disasters temporarily shutting down their primary operations.
