Thompson Helps Usc Slam Washington State

Women

Tina Thompson’s 29 points and 18 rebounds dominated play Thursday night as the University of Southern California trounced Washington State 101-59 in a Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball game in the Lyon Center on the USC campus at Los Angeles.

Thompson, who scored 21 of her points in the opening half, had plenty of help on offense. Kristin Clark collected 18 points and Adrian Williams scored 14 as the taller Women of Troy improved their season record to 19-7 and their Pac-10 mark to 13-4.

WSU fell to 10-16, 4-13 with one game left in the regular season.

Jennifer Ludwicki, who came off the bench to score 18 points, led Washington State.

Washington 76, UCLA 75

Laure Savasta, who had made just two of 13 shots in the game, nailed a 16-foot jumper with 9 seconds remaining to lift the Huskies (16-10, 11-6) past the Bruins (12-14, 6-11 at Los Angeles.

UC Santa Barbara 76, Idaho 57

Amy Smith scored 25 points and the Gauchos survived a second-half scare to beat the Vandals in the semifinals of the Big West tournament at Reno, Nev.

Santa Barbara (23-5), which gained its 13th straight victory, advanced to Saturday’s championship game against UC Irvine. Irvine defeated Long Beach State 57-50 in the other semifinal game.

Alli Nieman, the Big West’s Freshman of the Year, scored 26 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to spark Idaho (14-14), which saw its season end.
