Event Helps Aid Family Of Dan Vickrey

Friends and the community are rallying to aid the family of the late Dan Vickrey.

A group of his Central Valley High classmates is planning a dinner, dance and silent auction the evening of May 9, the date of the Strandberg Invitational Track Meet, to provide financial help for his family.

Timing couldn’t be more perfect. A 1979 graduate, Vickrey was a record-setting track athlete at CV who died in an auto accident last month.

He left his pregnant wife, Shannon, and six-year-old daughter, Jordan, without life insurance.

The dinner, dance and auction will be in the CV High multi-purpose room, beginning at 5 p.m. Cost for a family of four (two adults and two children) will be $10, with an additional $2 per person thereafter.

Already sports memorabilia and a week at a Palm Springs condo have been donated to the auction. The band “Loose Change” and area vendors have also donated services.

Anyone wishing to contribute further can do so by calling 891-2543.

A trust fund in Vickrey’s behalf has been established at Washington Trust Bank, 407 N. Sullivan, Veradale, WA 99037.

Good hands for Smallfoot

Ryan Smallfoot, a fifth grader at Chester Elementary, finished third during the regional Elks Hoop Shoot last weekend in Portland.

Smallfoot made 17 of 25 free throws during the competition, which qualified the winner to nationals in Massachusetts.

He competed in the 10-11 age group category against state winners from Alaska, Idaho and Oregon.

It was his fourth Elks Hoop Shoot competition in a series. Out of 100 total free throws, Smallfoot made 75.

Previously, he had won in local, district and state competitions in Spokane, Wenatchee and Seattle.
