Lakeside Finishes Below Expectations Second-Ranked Eagles Lose To Omak 50-40 To Finish Sixth In Girls State A Tournament

Sixth place and not a dry eye in the dressing room.

“I’m trying to look for answers and I really haven’t come up with one,” said Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz, after her team lost to Omak 50-40 to finish sixth at the girls State A high school basketball tournament Saturday afternoon at the Tacoma Dome.

“Maybe that Cascade game (a quarterfinal win) hit us too early. It kinda took some of the wind out of us,” she added, while unsuccessfully fighting back tears for the second straight postgame interview.

Eventual-state champ King’s of Seattle and then Omak (22-6) blew away their dreams all together.

“We really had our sights set a little higher,” said Schultz, whose Eagles entered as the No.2 team and finished at 23-3 in their last year at Class A.

But sub-par shooting (16 of 46 for 35 percent) and getting outrebounded 37-28 resulted in a sixth-place finish.

Lakeside’s top player Brianne Jolley, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, who scored only two points in Friday night’s game, got five in the first quarter Saturday. Jessica Hatch added four, but the Eagles still found themselves trailing at the end of the first period 13-10.

The game was knotted at 24 at the half, and Lakeside even enjoyed a 24-22 lead when Jolley drained her first of two 3-pointers.

Her other trey came in the second half. Those were the only points she scored in the second half as she finished with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting and six rebounds.

“We can’t ride the backs of one or two kids,” said Schultz, her exact words after Friday’s 48-42 loss to King’s.

“We’ve never played back-to-back games like this.”

Lakeside’s usually sound defense - one that forces 28 turnovers a game - forced 17 turnovers, but the Eagles also turned over the ball 17 times.

The Eagles cut the lead to 43-38 with 3:39 left on Hatch’s 4-foot bucket. Hatch finished with 10 points and Linsey Heebink added 11.

But like Friday, when Lakeside put Omak on the foul line down the stretch, the Pioneers continually missed but pulled in the rebound.

At the same time, Lakeside was held scoreless in the final 2 minutes.

Nikki Petticrew, who was averaging 14.3 points in three tournament games, went 0 for 8 with six 3-point attempts.
