Todd Eldredge of Chatham, Mass., the defending world champion in men’s figure skating, sprained his right ankle while training last week, which will prevent him from attempting a quadruple jump at the 1997 world championships that begin Sunday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Eldredge jammed his right ankle while attempting a triple axel last Thursday.
