Theologian Will Speak At Westminster

Lutheran theologian Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Friday at Westminster Congregational Church. The lecture, “Cry for Renewal,” will focus on the declining role of the church in American culture and daily life.

Nelson-Pallmeyer is in Spokane to take part in the Martin Luther King lecture series on Christianity and public life. The cost of the lecture is $5 to $15, on a sliding scale. No advance registration is required.

Nelson-Pallmeyer will also present a workshop called “It Takes a Whole Village to Raise One Child: Parenting and Politics for the Good of All Children.” The workshop, which will address welfare-reform issues, will be presented from 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m. Saturday, also at Westminster Congregational, 411 S. Washington.

No advance registration is required for the workshop. The cost is $20 to $35, on a sliding scale, and includes lunch.

Lenten concert will be Sunday

A Lenten concert of drama and music will be presented at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar, Sunday at 4 p.m.

The concert will feature literature by contemporary American authors in conjunction with African-American spirituals.

First Presbyterian’s Chancel Quartet will perform and will be assisted by music director Charlotte Kroeker on piano. Pat Stien, professor emeritus of theater arts at Whitworth College, will do the narration.

The concert is free, and all are welcome to attend.

Also at First Presbyterian, church youth are holding a pancake feed and car wash fund-raiser Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and the car wash each cost $4.

All proceeds will be used to send more than 100 youths to Tijuana, Mexico, in April to build 11 homes.

Luncheon will sport Irish theme

Central United Methodist Church, 518 W. Third, is hosting a lunch and silent auction Sunday at 11 a.m.

The cost of the Irish-themed lunch is $5 for adults and $2 for children under age 12.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 838-1431. They also will be for sale at the door.

Couples evening planned for Tuesday

The Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Road, will host a candlelight evening of prayer for couples Tuesday from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

The theme of the evening is “Crossing Over Into Intimacy.” The presentation will be offered by Leila and Mike Frederick.

Advance registration for the evening is required. The cost is $35 per couple, and child care will be available if requested in advance.
