The Devil To Stay At Wilson Creek
Residents of this Eastern Washington hamlet have decided against kicking the Devil out of the town’s high school.
An informal poll of residents indicated support for retaining the Devil as the mascot at Wilson Creek High, so a formal vote to consider a new name won’t be conducted.
Sixty-six percent of the more than 280 people who returned ballots circulated throughout town favored keeping the mascot, Principal Tom Wilson said. Thirty-four percent wanted a new name.
Students in grades 6-12 also voted to keep the Devils, the name the school’s athletic teams have used since the 1930s.
Poll results were presented to the Wilson Creek School Board on Tuesday. Had the vote been closer, school officials were considering mailing official ballots to residents containing suggested new mascot names.
