Curriculum School Chief Hopes To Get Parents More Involved

After just five days as coordinator of the East Valley School District’s new Continuous Curriculum School, Scott Read admits he’s got more questions than answers.

But he’s got ideas, too, and he wants to try them out on interested parents at a meeting Monday.

One of the first things to accomplish before the start of the new program is to set some goals.

Read, who until recently was assistant principal at Mountain View Middle School, hopes that involved parents will come Monday to the East Valley High School library, with their own ideas. The meeting is to start at 7 p.m.

He’ll offer out these thoughts, as a proposal: The program will be “a community school where kids become life-long learners, maximizing what they can learn in a year, creating well-rounded citizens, making C.C.S. a place we all want to be.”

As proposed expectations for students Read offers suggestions including these:

Students “will be expected to work hard and complete all your work on time … Each student will become a community servant. There will ‘no tolerance’ for classroom disruption, rudeness, foul language or any kind of fighting or bullying.

“Anyone who wants to work hard and behave is welcome even if he/she sometimes falls behind the class or races ahead of it. We will have fun, laughter, support and hard work.”

Read’s suggestions for parents include volunteering a certain number of hours and working nightly with their child on assignments.

Read emphasized that his suggestions for goals are just that - suggestions. He hopes that parents new to the program and those who’ve been involved with it to this point will help create the final goals.

Also on Monday, parents who have worked on committees for the modified calendar school will have the chance to register their children. Other patrons and parents from outside the district can register their children later this spring.

“Parents who have been involved all the way through should have the first shot at registration,” Read said. The maximum enrollment will be about 170 students.
