Police today charged a Maori activist who smashed the America’s Cup with a sledgehammer at the boating club where the coveted yachting prize was on display.

Benjamin P. Nathan was charged with criminal damage and trespass, which carry a maximum penalty of five years in jail. He was ordered held without bail. Nathan reportedly had been under psychiatric care.

A Maori group claimed responsibility for the attack on the old silver trophy, and said more violence would follow until whites end the “illegal occupation of New Zealand.”

Meg Sanders was promoted from interim to head coach of the Northern Arizona women’s basketball program.

American Major League Soccer will put teams in Chicago’s Soldier Field and Miami’s Orange Bowl next season, a year ahead of its announced plans.
