Bumper Bill Passes Senate, Awaits Batt’s Signature

From Staff And Wire Reports

June Judd’s bumper bill has passed the Senate. If the governor signs it into law, owners of high-rise trucks will have to install lowered bumpers on their vehicles by the beginning of the new year.

The bill, which passed on a 27-7 vote, was meant to stop monster trucks from driving over the top of other cars in accidents.

Sen. Lin Whitworth, D-Inkom, said that this bill was supported by many organizations such as the state police and the insurance industry.

Opposition was raised by Sen. Robbi King, R-Glenns Ferry, who said many of her constituants have such vehicles. King said in many cases, the bumpers of the vehicle were not the problem. Alcohol was the cause of most accidents involving the trucks, she said.

“It wasn’t the bumper that caused the accident,” agreed Whitworth. “It was the lack of bumpers that caused the accident.”
