Cwu Gets Victory In Tourney Opener

Associated Press

Willie Thomas poured in 27 points and Central Washington stunned fifth-seeded Incarnate Word (Texas) 61-58 on Tuesday, the third consecutive seeded team to fall in the first round of the NAIA Tournament.

The Wildcats (17-12) took the lead early in the first half, but didn’t secure the win until Paul Fraker’s fast-break layup with 10 seconds to play gave them a six-point advantage.

Central Washington was outrebounded 44-30, but still managed to hang on thanks to poor free-throw shooting by the Crusaders (8 of 15).

Incarnate Word (25-4) was led by Arnez Williams’ 19 points.
