Newport Dumps Garbage-Collection Plan
The Newport City Council on Tuesday ash-canned an unpopular proposal to require residents to subscribe to garbage collection service.
The ordinance’s leading proponent, Councilman Paul “P.J.” Hillestad, moved to defeat it. The vote to kill the proposal was 4-1, with Councilman James Kolthoff dissenting.
Hillestad said he dropped his support for mandatory garbage collection because of overwhelming opposition at a March 11 public hearing.
Forty to 50 residents attended the hearing and no one spoke in favor of the proposal. Opponents said city officials should use an existing nuisance ordinance to deal with people who fail to get rid of their garbage.
