Sun Executive Named Chairman Of Novell

Compiled From Wire Services

Novell Inc., seeking to buttress its eroding networking empire and bid for growing cyberspace markets, announced Tuesday that Sun Microsystems’ technology guru Eric Schmidt will be its new chairman and chief executive.

The 41-year-old Schmidt, an industry icon as Internet pioneer and prime mover behind Sun’s successful multiplatform Java programming language, officially takes Novell’s reins on April 7.

The Utah-based networking software company has been without a permanent chairman and CEO since Bob Frankenberg departed last August, amid family illness and criticism that he had been too slow in transforming the company.

Joe Marengi was promoted from vice president of worldwide sales to acting president, and has essentially been chief executive officer for six months. John Young, retired chairman of Hewlett Packard, stepped in as chairman.
