Parks Department Plans Meeting

A community park? More summer programs for children?

Indian Trail and Five Mile Prairie residents will have a chance to hear a presentation and share their thoughts with representatives from the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department. The meeting is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Woodridge Elementary School.

Topics will include long-range planning, setting up and establishing new parks, urban forestry, recreation programs and park operations.

Enrollment has dropped in recreation programs in the Indian Trail neighborhood, said Marion Severud, community relations supervisor for the Parks Department.

“We’ll talk about building a partnership with the community, what they need and what we can help with,” she said.

Sharon Page, Indian Trail neighborhood organizer, is looking forward to the meeting.

“It will be an opportunity for citizens to hear what the Parks Department has in mind for the area, and for the department to hear what citizens want in terms of parks, open spaces and recreation,” said Page.

“Hopefully it will be the start of ongoing dialogue between citizens and the city,” she said.

Kathy Miotke, who is active in Five Mile Prairie development issues, is interested in learning if parks are being planned for the prairie - and when.

“We have been told that we probably will not have access to a park on the prairie for the next 15 to 20 years,” said Miotke. “The land and money just aren’t available.

“I want a better view of the big picture and the land they hope to purchase for a park,” she said.

City staff members expected to attend the meeting include Parks and Recreation Department Director Ange Taylor, who lives in the Indian Trail Neighborhood; Paul Crutchfield, assistant director; Mike Stone, urban forestry; Hal McGlathery, recreation; Taylor Bressler, park operations; and Judy Quinlivan, leases and contracts.
