Five Local Residents Recognized In Military

Five Inland Northwest residents serving in the U.S. armed forces recently received recognition:

Robert Benson, son of Gloria and John Benson, Valleyford, was promoted to the rank of senior airman at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, N.C. He is a 1989 graduate of Freeman High School, Rockford.

Eric Marcellus, son of Alvie and Phyllis Marcellus, Spokane, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Army Reserve Officer’s Training Corps program. He is a 1991 graduate of Ferris High School and received a bachelor’s degree at the University of Idaho.

For the second time, Staff Sgt. Marla Farver has received the Air Force Achievement Medal for meritorious service, acts of courage, or other outstanding accomplishments.

Farver works in the personnel field at Fairchild Air Force Base.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Tammy VanKeuren, daughter of Robert and Sally VanKeuren, Spokane, graduated from the electronic principles course at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Ronald Blackburn, son of Lawrence and Patricia Blackburn, Spokane, has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the Air Force. He is a ground radio technician journeyman at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City.

Chelsea Cada, Colville, Wash., was named to the Dean’s List at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Va., for the fall semester. She is the daughter of Larry and Patsy Cada and a graduate of Colville High School.

Three Spokane students were named to the Dean’s Honor Roll for fall semester at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.:

Becky Van Gemert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Van Gemert; Kerry Donovan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Donovan; and Matthew Frazier, son of Marty Frazier.

Matthew Johnson, son of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Johnson, Colbert, received highest honors and was named to the Dean’s List for fall semester at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.

Four Spokane-area students received Ben B. Cheney Foundation scholarships to attend Gonzaga University or its law school:

Spokane students Ryan Barrett, civil engineering; Sean Anderson and Darci Bentson, both law; and Michelle Manges, Medical Lake, accounting.
