Four Students Win Hoop Free-Throw Competition

Inland Northwest students named Washington state champions in the Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest were: Girls 8-9, Kara Crisp, Spokane, second place.

Boys 10-11, Ryan Smallfoot, Veradale, first place.

Girls 12-13, Jill Oglesbee, Spokane, third place.

Cheney Middle School students competed very well in the Eastern Washington Regional Science Olympiad at Gonzaga University.

Students on the Green Team, which took first place, were: Isaac Brunell, Robert Cartwright, Brandon Eggart, Peter Gresham, Dan Guske, Michael Jabon, Joe Leinhard, Brady McMacken, Braxton Osting, Charisse Oyolokor, Kassi Oyolokor, Chad Portwood, Kate Stoll, Emmett Strout and Mike Trahner.

Also competing from Cheney on the Gold Team were Christine Abbott, Craig Cordill, Nathaniel Davaz, Joey Gosse, Nick Guidry, Maria Jabon, Andrea Jones, Eric May, Dylan O’Conner, Ashley Pardun and Billy Weisgerber.

Area students attending the University of Idaho who were named to the Dean’s List for fall semester include:

Deer Park: Jaidean Watson, Craig Brown and Matthew Lippis.

Colbert: Steven Wall.

Brian Leppert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Leppert Sr., has earned his Eagle Scout rank, the highest award presented by the Boy Scouts of America.

Leppert, a student at Rogers High School, is a member of the Order of the Arrow and a past recipient of the Northeast Neighborhood Superkid Award. He is a member of Troop 11, sponsored by the Church of the Latter-day Saints.

The Ben B. Cheney Foundation granted scholarships to four students attending Gonzaga University:

Spokane: Sean Anderson and Darci Bentson, both law students; and Ryan Barrett, civil engineering.

Medical Lake: Michelle Manges, accounting.

Rick Petry, Spokane, has been named to the Dean’s List at Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minn. Petry received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Washington University.

Marine Lance Cpl. Richard Lindgren, son of Zanna Lindgren, Rosalia, Wash., was recently promoted to his present rank at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He is a 1990 graduate of Rosalia High School.

Marine Pfc. Kenneth Heaton, son of Ken Heaton Sr., Spokane, received a Meritorious Mast for superior individual performance while at Keneohe Bay, Hawaii. He is a 1995 graduate of John Rogers High School.

Mario Dion Roybal, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malex Roybal, Spokane, received his chiropractic degree at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He is a graduate of Central Valley High School and Eastern Washington University.
