WSU Wins Five Awards In Publishing Contest
Washington State University won five awards in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada professional competition in communication and publishing.
Silver Awards
WSU Press in the World Wide Web site competition. Site designer was John Vleck; writers Beth DeWeese and Keith Petersen.
University Publications and Printing and WSU Admission in the student audiences competition, for the poster, “Learning Opportunities.” Designer was Doug Garcia; publications coordinator was John Sutherland. Terry Flynn is WSU’s admissions director.
Universe, WSU’s magazine of research and scholarship, published by the Graduate School, was edited by Tim Steury, News and Information Services.
Bronze Awards

Dmitri Arbacauskus, Spokane, had his poem, “Zen Precipitation,” published in the anthology, “Daybreak on the Land,” by The National Library of Poetry.
Michael Hanly, associate professor of English at Washington State University, has been awarded a Fulbright senior scholar research grant for work in Italy next year.
Hanly’s academic specialty is European literature and culture of the Middle Ages. While in Italy, he will examine original archival documents and literary manuscripts.
After he returns, he intends to complete a book-length study on the topic.
Brittany Hopkins and Travis Ruhl, both of Spokane, have been named to the Dean’s List for fall semester at Boston (Mass.) University.
Four Sacajawea Middle School math students won first-place trophies during the MathCounts Competition at North Central High School:
Silas Hilliard, Mike Hess, John Wheaton and Herman Chong. Bob Eckenrode is their math teacher.
Six Spokane-area engineers were named Engineer of the Year for various areas of the profession:
C. Phillips Purdy Jr. - Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration.
N. Bruce Rawls - American Society of Civil Engineers.
Don Bennett - American Society for Quality Control.
Steven Schennum - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Lawrence Peden - Structural Engineers Association of Washington.
Lawrence Denny - Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Five Inland Northwest students attending Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., were named to the Dean’s List for fall semester. They are:
Benjamin Gmelch and Natasha Tobias, Pullman; Brenna Colvin, Reardan; and Jessica Leuthold and Eric Sargent, Spokane.
Robert Heydet, Deer Park, was named to the Dean’s List at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, for fall semester.
Spokane-area jazz students struck the right chords at the University of Idaho Jazz Festival and received numerous honors.

Pullman: Lincoln Middle School, middle school vocal ensemble, Annie McNamara, vocal soloist runner-up and Danielle Ivory, vocal soloist runner-up; Jefferson Elementary, elementary school vocal ensemble and outstanding overalll vocal ensemble; Haley Hudson, Franklin Elementary, vocal soloist; Pullman High, Jaime Miller, A/B soloist winner, and Julia Berthiaume, runner-up.
Washington State University, outstanding bossa nova composition for choir; Chris Earley, outstanding drummer solo division; Tracie King, outstanding bassist with a college choir.
Cheney: Cheney Middle School, middle school instrumental winner and second-place instrumental ensemble; Eastern Washington University, Scott Sauer, outstanding brass player solo division; Jon Hamar, outstanding bassist solo division; Cheney High, instrumental runner-up; Darin Kamstra, outstanding percussionist with a college band.
Chattaroy: Riverside High School, runner-up vocals and instrumental runner-up.
Ione: Selkirk High, Amberdawn Bolding, A/B soloist runner-up.
Colfax: Colfax High School, instrumental runner-up.
Kettle Falls: Kettle Falls High, instrumental runner-up.
Eastern Washington University publications were selected for recognition by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District VIII.

Dan Turbeville, associate professor of geography at Eastern Washington University, has been elected to a two-year term as president of the Association of Washington Geographers.
Danele Ducharme, a senior radio-television major at Eastern Washington University, won a student Oscar from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in regional competition. She attended the awards ceremony in California on March 9 to receive her Oscar in the Music Video category and a $400 prize.
Michael Baumgartner, a student Washington State University majoring in economics and minoring in French, received a scholarship from the Inland Northwest World Trade Council. He is a sophomore honors student.
