Gonzaga Crews Plan Only Home Regatta Saturday
Gonzaga University’s men’s and women’s crews stage their only home regatta of the spring Saturday at Long Lake against Washington State and Western Washington in men’s and women’s freshmen, junior varsity and varsity races.
Freshmen races start at 10 a.m., followed by races every 15 minutes through 12:15 p.m.
It’s the first spring regatta for both the GU squads.
GU men’s coach Dan Gehn is enthusiastic about this year’s squad.
“I think this is the strongest squad I’ve had in the past three years,” he said, noting the Bulldogs would be young but fast. Five to six sophomores could be racing in the varsity boat, he said.
Track and field
Washington State’s Leo Slack was in second place and Heidi Shultz in fourth after the first day at the Fresno State Decathlon/Heptathlon competition Monday.
Slack, a junior and the defending Pac-10 decathlon champion, scored 4,004 points, 55 behind the leader, Ray Livingston, an Oregon graduate competing for the Oregon International Track Club.
There are 24 decathlon entrants.
Shultz, a senior, scored 2,966 points in her first four events. Robin Unger, unattached, leads the 16-woman field with 3,326 points.
Wrestling
Local high school wrestlers won 8 of 12 matches, four by pins, in a cultural exchange meet against a young touring team of Russians from the Siberia region Monday night at East Valley.
