Wwp Seeks Ok For Dredging Work

From Staff And Wire Reports

Washington Water Power Co. wants to dredge the Spokane River downstream of the Post Street Bridge because large stones threaten the intake to its Monroe Street generating plant.

Senior Engineer Tim Carlberg said the operation would be the second in two years caused by high streamflows after several years of low water.

Last year, he said, lose rock forced the utility to partially close the intake gates, reducing output from the generating plant by as much as 50 percent.

WWP has asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a permit to move 3,000 cubic yards of rocks up to 16 inches in diameter from above the dam to a point below the dam. The permit would be good for rock-removal work in each of 10 years.

The work could take place in April or July, and take about three weeks, Carlberg said. , DataTimes
