Davis Plays Hero As M’S Win Easily Seattle Overwhelms Farm Club In Final Spring Training Game

Associated Press

Russ Davis hit a grand slam in Seattle’s 14-4 win over the Lancaster Jet-Hawks Sunday night in the Mariners’ final spring exhibition game.

Davis hit his home run during Seattle’s eight-run second inning in a sold-out exhibition against the Mariners’ Class-A affiliate.

The Mariners piled up 17 hits against seven Lancaster pitchers, including a solo home run by Rob Ducey.

Seattle’s Randy Johnson allowed three runs on six hits in four innings against the JetHawks.

Although he didn’t display the form that made him the 1995 Cy Young Award winner, the tall lefthander said he at least made good on one of his goals.

“Not to get hurt,” is how Johnson described his strategy Sunday.

The standing-room only crowd of 6,977 was treated to a seven strikeout performance by Johnson, who threw 85 pitches. He walked one and hit a batter.

“It was important for me to get work in,” said Johnson, who spent most of the 1996 season on the disabled list with an irritated nerve in his lower back. “I was pleased, I guess.”

Johnson is scheduled to pitch Friday against Boston at the Kingdome. The Mariners open their season Tuesday at home against New York.

Lancaster’s Aaron Scheffer went 1-2/3 innings, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits and struck out one.

Ken Griffey Jr. had two hits for the M’s.
