Canadiens Coach Quits

Compiled From Wire Services

Mario Tremblay, his team eliminated in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by New Jersey, resigned as coach of the Montreal Canadiens.

“I was looking around and saw my two daughters and my wife and I realized there was not much joy in our family now,” Tremblay said at a news conference, his voice breaking at times. “Therefore, I thought it was time to move on.”

The Canadiens (31-36-15) won just one game against the Devils and didn’t make the playoffs until the final weekend of the season.

There was no immediate word on a replacement.
