Valley Nazarene Burns Mortgage

Nina Culver Correspondent

The Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene held a mortgage burning ceremony during worship services last Sunday. The church, which recently celebrated its 47th anniversary, incurred a debt of $120,000 five years ago when it built a new three-story addition to its building at 10814 E. Broadway.

At the time, the growing church was bursting at the seams. “We were using every room twice,” Pastor Randall Denny said. “It’s a lot better than it was beforehand.”

The church has purchased land at the corner of Sullivan Road and 20th Avenue for possible relocation, but is only in the early stages of planning. Meanwhile, church members will enjoy their debt-free status.

“Zero balance looks pretty good to this guy,” Denny said.

‘Teas, Tires and Tulips’

The community is invited to attend a spring festival, whimsically titled “Teas, Tires, and Tulips,” at Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines. It will run from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. on next Saturday.

The festival will feature Motorama ‘97, a collection of cars designed to make automobile lovers giddy. Booths of gardening displays will be set up, and plants and outdoor ornaments will be available for purchase. An English tea, complete with scones and finger sandwiches, will be served.

All events will be occurring simultaneously. Tickets for the tea are $3 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. All other events are free.

Opportunity Presbyterian will also hold a special worship service at 7 p.m. today to accommodate those running Bloomsday. There will be only one worship service at 11 a.m. on Sunday and no Sunday School classes will be held.

Mother/daughter tea

Pasadena Park Church of the Nazarene, 8822 E. Upriver Drive, will host a mother/daughter tea next Saturday to celebrate Mother’s Day.

The tea will feature author Pat Pfieffer, whose latest book, “Above All Women,” is about the life of Mary.

The tea is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. The event is free, but those who want to attend must register by Wednesday.

For more information or to make reservations, call 926-5858.
