Kudos to Frank Bruder

Nice to see an athlete from Idaho has qualified for the NCAA meet, as well as a front-page article on collegiate track and field!

With the number of high-caliber track and field athletes this area has produced (indubitably Spokane has one of the higher outputs per capita), you would think we’d have more coverage. It’s a shame that it takes a 26-year-old import to catch The Spokesman’s attention.

Kudos to Frank Bruder for qualifying, and best of luck to him and coach Mike Keller at the NCAA’s. We’ll be watching.

However, one can’t help wonder how many other local athletes would qualify if they were given eligibility to run at 26 years old. Alex Dressel Spokane

Let’s focus on the positive

I am a huge sports fan, especially local sports teams like the Mariners and the Sonics.

I don’t want to complain because I really enjoy the articles in your paper, but I think the headlines need adjusting. Last Friday (April 25) the Sonics opened the playoff series with Phoenix and lost, and they had the main headline and it read “REX HEXES SONICS.” No local sports fan wants to see that as a big headline, especially when Ken Griffey breaks a home-run record by hitting three in one game against Roger Clemens.

It’s my opinion that it would have been better if you had put Griffey’s accomplishment as the main headline instead of the Sonics’ failure. People like it a lot better when they see a big headline of something they like compared to something they don’t like. I didn’t appreciate seeing the Sonics’ loss in big letters on the front of the sports page. It’s a bad memory that’s best forgotten.

The focus should have been put on Griffey. He’s on pace to hit almost 78 home runs. I think it would improve the look and maybe circulation if you focused a little more on the bright side and not the negative side. Jason Clutter Spokane
