In 1793: A broke artist Gilbert Stuart returned to the United States from England to do the work that he knew would make him money - portraits of George Washington.

In 1862:Walden author Henry David Thoreau, 44, died. As he lay dying, an aunt asked him if he had made peace with God. “I did not know we ever quarreled,” he said.

In 1915: Babe Ruth hit his first major-league home run, against the Yankees.

In 1935: The Works Progress Administration began operating.

In 1937: The hydrogen-filled German dirigible Hindenburg burned and crashed in Lakehurst, N.J., killing 36 of the 97 people on board.

In 1942: During World War II, some 15,000 Americans and Filipinos on Corregidor surrendered to the Japanese.

In 1954: Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile , finishing in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.
