Expos Put On Hitting Clinic

Associated Press

Mike Lansing homered twice in Montreal’s record 13-run sixth inning and Henry Rodriguez hit a grand slam in a five-run fifth as the Expos beat the San Francisco Giants 19-3 Wednesday at 3Com Park.

Lansing hit a two-run homer and a three-run homer in the sixth, an inning in which four other Montreal players each had two hits. The 13 runs in the sixth inning, in which 17 Expos batted, set an N.L. record and tied a major league mark.

By scoring 18 runs in consecutive innings, the Expos set an N.L. record for the 20th century. It broke the mark of 17 runs in consecutive innings set by the New York Giants against the Boston Braves on Sept. 3, 1926.

The A.L. record for runs in consecutive innings is 19. The pre-1900 N.L. record is 21.

Butler relieved

A year and a day after finding out he had cancer in his tonsils, Brett Butler admitted he thought there was a reoccurrence of the disease before Tuesday’s MRI revealed only a torn cartilage in his left shoulder.

“The thing that keeps ringing in my ear is that it’s not cancer,” Butler said. “It crossed my mind. It was a relief. And with that (news), I can live with anything else.”
