Jason Berger University Year: Senior Sport: Track Position: Sprinter

Ask University track coach Keven Frandsen and Titans sprint star Jason Berger why the senior has become so dominant this year and they both come up the same answer.

“It’s called winter training,” Frandsen said. “He trained all winter. Period.”

Berger, pointed to assistant coach Vic Wallace and said, “A lot of it is training. He’s getting our timing right for peaking.”

Finally injury-free and free from spending his winters wrestling and doing football workouts, Berger has blossomed.

After three years of peaking at 11 seconds for the 100 meters, he has dipped to 10.78. It seems as if he lowers his 200 best every meet, getting down to 22.2. His 400 time is now 49.63. All three times are electronic.

Not only are all three times the best in the GSL, Berger is on the state-best 400 relay team (42.4) and No. 2 1,600 relay team (3:22.65).

“I didn’t really want to set times (for goals),” Berger said. “When I exceeded what I thought I would, making those jumps, I was shocked. It made me work harder to reach the next level.”

Berger’s favorite event is the 200. Frandsen believes his best chance at state in an individual event is the 100. Both have sights set on two winning relay teams.
