Bruder’s Steeplechase Effort 2nd-Best By U.S. Collegian In ‘97

University of Idaho steeplechaser Frank Bruder continues to break his own school records as he prepares for a bid for an NCAA title.

Bruder, a senior from Germany, won a Friday night meet at Stanford University with an Idaho record of 8 minutes, 34.88 seconds over the 3,000-meter course. Bruder already has qualified for the June 4-7 NCAA championships at Bloomington, Ind. His effort Friday is second-best in the nation this spring.

Javelin thrower Oscar Duncan improved his chances of joining Bruder at the NCAA meet when he won Friday’s competition with a throw of 227 feet, 5 inches - an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and one of the 12 best in the nation this spring.

Joining Bruder and Duncan as Friday winners was 400-meter specialist Tawanda Chiwira, who won in 46.72 seconds.

Kyle Daley finished second in the hammer throw with a heave of 190-10 and Niels Kruller also pulled in a runner-up finish with his time of 10.69 in the 100 meters. Felix Kamangirira was third in the 200 in 21.74.

Today the UI men are at the Modesto Relays while the women are at Boise State.
