Who’s hot
The Dow’s biggest gainers on Friday were Caterpillar, up $2.37-1/5 to $96.62-1/2; Procter & Gamble, up $2 to $132; American Express, up $1.50 to $68.50; and Merck, up $1.50 to $90.25.
What’s not
On NASDAQ, Cephalon Inc. shares fell 35 percent Friday after a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel Thursday refused to recommend the company’s drug, Myotrophin, for use in treating Lou Gehrig’s disease.
The company’s shares fell $7 to close at $13, for the day’s biggest percentage loss on U.S. markets. Also falling Friday: Centigram Communications, down $1 at $9.50 The San Jose, Calif.-based telecommunications products maker said late Thursday that it expected second-quarter earnings to fall shy of Wall Street expectations.
And EchoStar Communications, was down $1.75 at $13.62-1/2 The Englewood, Colo.-based company asked a federal court late Thursday to force News Corp. to loan it $200 million. Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., which agreed to buy EchoStar for $1 billion, had agreed to make the loan if Echostar needed it before regulators cleared the buyout.
