Woman Faces At Least 10 Years For Shooting

From Staff And Wire Reports

Barbara Flomer will spend at least 10 years in prison for riddling her husband’s ex-girlfriend with bullets.

Second District Judge John Stegner sentenced the former police dispatcher to 20 years with 10 fixed on Friday.

Flomer, 37, pleaded guilty in March to attempted murder and infliction of great bodily harm.

Latah prosecutor William Thompson Jr. asked for a minimum term of 10 years, saying it would give victim Delaine Hawley and her family peace of mind at least until Hawley’s children are grown.

Previously, Flomer faced a maximum of 35 years.

Defense attorney James Siebe asked for a lesser sentence, saying Flomer had no criminal history before her husband, Rick, began having an affair with Hawley.

Hawley testified the affair ended two months before the shooting.

Flomer apologized for her actions.

“Without me forgiving them, I don’t have the Lord’s forgiveness,” she said. “I hope someday she can forgive me.”

During the sentencing, Stegner listed Hawley’s injuries, including a punctured lung and lost kidney and an injured pancreas that makes her a borderline diabetic.

“It is absolutely a miracle that this woman is alive today,” Thompson said.

Stegner disagreed with the prosecution’s claims that Flomer acted without being provoked, saying the affair was provocation.

According to police accounts, on Aug. 17, 1996, Flomer carried a gun as she and her husband met Hawley in a Moscow park.

Flomer said she wanted her husband to tell Hawley the affair was over. Then Flomer went to Hawley’s vehicle and ordered her to roll down the window. After Hawley refused, Flomer produced the gun and opened fire. , DataTimes
