Help Inventory Bats

Wildlife

Do you have any bats in your attic or outbuildings? Maybe you know of bats living in old buildings downtown.

Washington Fish and Wildlife Department biologists would like to know about groups of nesting bats for an inventory being conducted in the Spokane area.

Report any sightings to Howard Ferguson, 456-4420.

Why are the biologists interested? Considering there are no vampire bats in North America, bats are good neighbors. For instance:

Each night, bats eat between 3,000-7,000 insects, including mosquitoes. That’s much better than a bug zapper.

A single brown bat can protect crops by eliminating at least 120,000 corn root worms in just one summer. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
